Simply Explained

How a Fixed Indexed Annuity Protects You

Think of it as a floor under your retirement savings. The market can go up, down, or sideways — but your credited interest only goes in one direction.

Market Goes Up

You receive interest credits based on index performance, subject to caps, participation rates, or performance triggers.

You Participate ↑

Market Goes Down

Your principal is protected. Interest credited in prior periods is locked in. You receive 0% for that period — not a loss.

0% Floor — No Loss*

*Refers to index crediting. Withdrawals, surrender charges, and rider fees can reduce values. Guarantees backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing carrier.

Key Concepts — Plain English

1

0% Floor

When the index goes down, you're credited 0% — not negative. Your past gains stay locked in.

2

3

Interest Locks In

Once interest is credited to your policy, it's yours. The market cannot take it back.

4

Liquidity Access

Many policies allow 10% annual free withdrawals starting year 2. Surrender periods apply.

Common Questions

Honest Answers Before You Call

What exactly is a fixed indexed annuity?

A fixed indexed annuity (FIA) is an insurance contract issued by a life insurance company. It offers the potential for interest credits linked to a market index (like the S&P 500) without directly investing in the market. Your principal is protected through a 0% floor on index crediting. Once interest is credited, it’s locked in. FIAs are not bank products, securities, or direct investments.

Can I really never lose money with these?

The 0% floor protects from market-based index losses during crediting periods. However, withdrawals in excess of free amounts, surrender charges, and rider charges can reduce your accumulation value. Guarantees depend on the claims-paying ability of the issuing company.

What is a guaranteed lifetime income rider (GLIR)?

A GLIR is an optional rider providing guaranteed income for life once activated. On select products, the GLIR activation bonus can boost the income benefit base by up to 200%. Choose level or increasing income. Standard GLIR charges approximately 1% annually of accumulation value; some products offer a No-Charge GLIR option. The guarantee is backed by the issuing carrier’s claims-paying ability.

What does “activation bonus up to 200%” mean?

On select products, when you activate the GLIR, the income benefit base may receive a bonus — up to 200%. This applies to the income calculation, not your actual account value. Specifics vary by product and state.

Can I access my money if I need it?

Yes. Many products allow up to 10% annual withdrawals without surrender charges starting in year 2. Additional access may be available through Nursing Care or Terminal Illness riders. Excess withdrawals may incur charges. Early withdrawals prior to 59½ may incur a 10% IRS penalty.

What happens to my money when I die?

On many products, your named beneficiaries receive the full accumulation value without surrender charges. Specific death benefit provisions vary by product.

Is this a good idea inside an IRA?

An annuity inside a qualified account (IRA, 401(k) rollover) does not provide additional tax-deferral since those accounts are already tax-deferred. People choose annuities inside IRAs for principal protection, guaranteed lifetime income, and interest-locking features.

Difference between a cap and participation rate?

A cap sets a maximum on credited interest. A participation rate determines what percentage of index gain is credited. Some products also offer a “performance trigger” that credits a set rate if the index doesn’t go negative. Specific rates vary and are subject to change.

Are these products FDIC insured?

No. Fixed indexed annuities are insurance products. They are not FDIC insured, not insured by any government agency, and not bank or credit union guaranteed. Guarantees are backed solely by the claims-paying ability of the issuing company.

What is a surrender period?

A surrender period (typically 5, 7, or 10 years) is the timeframe during which excess withdrawals may incur charges. Charges decrease over time to 0%. Only fund an annuity with money you’re comfortable committing for that period.

Is this available in my state?

Product availability varies by state. Some products or features may not be available in all states. Certain materials are not approved for use in New York. We confirm availability during the review.

Who is the insurance company behind these products?

Products are issued by Life Insurance Company of the Southwest (LSW), a member of National Life Group — in business 177+ years, A.M. Best A+, S&P A+, Moody’s A1 rated, $56B+ in total assets. Guarantees backed by the issuing company’s claims-paying ability.

What does the call cost?

Nothing. The review is completely free with no obligation. 15–25 minutes. If an annuity isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you — and you’ll still leave with clarity.

How is the agent compensated?

If you move forward, the agent receives a commission from the insurance company — not from you. There is no separate fee. The commission is built into the product by the carrier.

What if I decide this isn’t for me?

Completely fine. No obligation. Most products include a “free look” period (10–30 days depending on state) during which you can return the policy for a full refund.

15 Minutes Could Change How You Retire

You’ll either discover a strategy that protects everything you’ve worked for — or you’ll confirm you’re already on the right track. Either way, you win.

Important Disclosures

Fixed indexed annuities are insurance products issued by Life Insurance Company of the Southwest (LSW), Addison, TX, a member of National Life Group. They are not deposits of any bank or credit union. They are not FDIC or NCUA insured. They are not insured by any federal or state government agency. They are not guaranteed by any bank or credit union. They may lose value due to withdrawals, surrender charges, or rider fees.

Guarantees are dependent upon the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Guaranteed lifetime income is subject to rider terms and the claims-paying ability of the issuer. GLIR activation bonuses apply to the income benefit base calculation, not the accumulation value. Standard GLIR charges are deducted annually from accumulation value (approximately 1%); No-Charge GLIR available on select products.

National Life Group is a trade name of National Life Insurance Company (NLIC), Montpelier, VT, and Life Insurance Company of the Southwest (LSW), Addison, TX, and their affiliates. Each company is solely responsible for its own financial condition and contractual obligations. LSW is not an authorized insurer in New York and does not conduct insurance business in New York.

Index returns do not include dividends. Clients are not directly investing in any stock or index. Interest credits are subject to caps, participation rates, performance triggers, and/or spreads, set by the carrier and subject to change. Past index performance does not guarantee future results.

Principal protection refers to protection from market-based index losses during crediting periods (0% floor). Withdrawals in excess of free withdrawal amounts, surrender charges, and rider fees can reduce accumulation values. Up to 10% annual free withdrawal without surrender charges or MVA starting policy year 2 (product and rider terms apply). Early withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty. Buying an annuity within an IRA or other tax-deferred plan does not give extra tax benefits.
